Interior and Exterior Painting

All homeowners eventually have to decide if it is time for painting house exterior surfaces. Is the existing paint cracked, peeling, or missing sections? Is there bare wood, metal, or underlying material showing through? If you answer “yes” to either of these questions, then painting is probably in order. As paint is exposed to weather, direct sunlight, and other environmental conditions it will fade and gradually wear off. This means there is much less protection for the underlying surface, so if there are any signs of fading or wear then you should repaint. Exterior painting can really make your house look fresh and new. And with special protective elements in the paint or stain, you can maintain this fresh look for years to come. Painting is one of the most popular home improvement projects you can undertake, but it can be more difficult than you might think. Whether you're planning an interior or exterior painting project, hiring a painting contractor will save a lot of time and energy in the long run.

Things McNik Construction will do when we paint an exterior.

1. Your home's current structure: We’ll evaluate whether there are any structural damage or wear that needs to be repaired before you attempt to paint. Things like rotten wood, damaged stucco, or deteriorating shutters, etc. are things you may need to repair before we start painting. Do you have things like chalking, peeling, rutting? Are there gaps where surfaces meet? Is mold or mildew present? We make you sure to repair everything before the paint goes on so that your new coat of paint will last as long as possible.
2. The type of paint you'll need: There have been many improvements in the quality and the types of paints available for exterior use. For example, some have been designed for specific climates, some prevent mold and mildew growth. In addition, there have been improvements in specific paints available to match the material you'll be covering. Remember almost any type of material can be painted: wood, stucco, aluminum siding, vinyl siding, metal, brick.
3. Protection of your home's landscaping: Painting can be a very messy project. We will lay drop cloths over any flowers, shrubs, bushes or trees that are in the direct area that will be painted. We understand the importance of protecting your landscape and other outdoor features of your home, including your driveway, porch or deck will ensure that they are protected during painting.
4. Color schemes and themes: We’ll discuss your color scheme or theme with you. Here you can really get creative. Take a trip to the paint store and investigate your options. Remember almost any surface can be painted, so you're not limited to just one color or idea.

Interior Painting A few Tips
1. Determine which areas of your home need to be painted.
2. Consider any work you want to have done before painting. For example, do you need to replace or repair moldings, patch damaged drywall or hang new doors?
3. Decide what colors and paints you want to use. You can get paint charts for all major brands at general home centers or paint stores. Feel free to ask our opinion on this matter
4. Have McNik Construction inspect the site and quote a price for the job. Make sure McNik is quoting on the same specifications - areas to be painted, number of coats and so forth. We’ll give you a a quote for free.
5. Remove all furniture and other movable items before the painter is scheduled to begin. Anything not removed should be piled together in the center of the room and thoroughly covered with drop cloths.
