Advantages of the Different Types of Roofs Offered
Asphalt shingles. These are composed on an inner core, usually of fiberglass coated with asphalt on both sides. Advantages: wide variety in styles and colors, inexpensive, easy to repair, fire resistant. Disadvantages: short life span (15-30 years only), easily affected by hotness and coldness of climate, not environmentally friendly.
Wood shingles. They are sawn from blocks of wood, tapered and have smooth surface. Advantages: natural look, offers some insulation value, easy to repair, long lasting (30-50 years). Disadvantages: expensive, high maintenance, fire prone.
Clay Roof tiles. Made out of kiln-fired clay. Advantages: wide variety of styles and colors, long life span, low maintenance. Disadvantages: more fragile, heavy, complicated installation. Not good for wet weather.
Metal Roof tiles. Advantages: wide variety of styles and colors, lightweight, durable, low maintenance, long life span (30-50 years). Disadvantages: complicated installation, expensive.
Slate shingles. composed of fine grains of quartz and mica, either muscovite or illite, along with a range of other minerals all mixed together. Advantages: beautiful appearance, fireproof, longest life span, low maintenance. Disadvantages. Very expensive, requires specialized installation, heavy.
Concrete. Roof tile made from sand, cement and water. Advantages: wide variety of styles and color, lightweight, resource efficient. Disadvantages: Can be very expensive, uneven quality among products.
